THE FABRIC OF HISTORY: Most people grew up with at least one quilt in a bedroom of the family home. Now, you can see a unique style of quilting at the Sankofa Quilt Show 2005. "Piecing fabrics" is an age-old African textile tradition that dates back to the days of slavery in the United States. "Slaves made quilts with patterns that carried codes to help runaway slaves navigate to freedom," says Helen Gordon of Temecula and member of the Kanzi Sewing Circle. The exhibition, "Learn From the Past," is open through Feb. 28 at the East County Performing Arts Center, 210 E. Main St., in El Cajon and will feature more than 25 quilters using African fabrics. Admission price vary. For more information, visit members.aol.com/kanziquilts or call (619) 440-2277.
